MDDE Coronavirus Update

Federalsburg, MD -

To our valued partners:

We are all facing an unprecedented situation as the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread. The Maryland and Delaware Railroad Company (MDDE) recognizes the important role we play for your business and we are committed to maintaining high-quality, uninterrupted service to our customers throughout this uncertain time.

We are carefully monitoring this evolving situation in an effort to anticipate potential challenges before they arise. The health and safety of our employees, customers and vendors continues to be of the highest priority. To that end, we are taking the following actions to mitigate the risks of the coronavirus:

- Reducing the number of employees in the office by asking those who are able to work from home to do so. Rest assured that this will not affect your ability to reach us by phone or email.

- Utilizing split teams for train crews to limit the potential exposure of our operations employees.

- Ensuring that crew reporting locations, equipment, and other facilities remain supplied with cleaning and disinfecting products.

- Adhering closely to facility-specific guidance from our customers on limiting or eliminating physical interaction between train crews and facility staff.

The spread of the coronavirus has necessitated a range of actions by federal and state authorities to contain the virus and mitigate its effects. I’m sure you are all checking the news regularly to keep up with the latest developments, just as we are. Some states have implemented “shelter in place” policies, quarantine zones and/or other forms of geographically defined restrictions. While railroads are generally regulated by the federal government due to their role in interstate commerce, we have been watching these developments closely. Freight railroads, as essential carriers in the supply chain, have been exempt from these state-wide restrictions and have been able to continue to operate normally. We expect the same will be true in Maryland and Delaware, if and when such additional restrictions are put into place.

MDDE is continually updating our contingency plans based on our current understanding of the virus and compliance with health guidelines and government requirements. I am sure your plans and procedures are also evolving as additional information becomes available. As always, we welcome open communication. Please let us know how we can best support your company’s safety protocols, social distancing measures, etc.

We are in regular communication with our partners in state and local government, as well as our Class I connections and short line colleagues. We will provide any relevant updates as needed, but please do not hesitate to contact me directly with any questions or concerns. I can always be reached via email or on my cell phone (443-235-9240).

We appreciate your business and your trust.
