Transload
The Maryland and Delaware Railroad Company offers multi-modal transloading, warehousing and distribution options for shippers across our operating area. Located in the heart of the Delmarva Peninsula, our transload partners distribute to the surrounding area in all directions.
Whether you need transload, reload, cross dock, storage-in-transit or warehouse services, we have the experience to keep your supply chain fluid.
By using our transload facilities, shippers and receivers benefit from both the cost advantages of long-distance rail service and the speed and reliability of local truck distribution. Additionally, warehouse and storage facilities offer the comfort of having your product readily accessible at any time.
Commodities with which we have experience providing transload and distribution services include: steel products, granulated fertilizers, feed ingredients, frozen food, palletized food ingredients, liquid food products, board lumber, wooden pilings, rolled paper, scrap paper, soda ash, bentonite clay, and calcium chloride.

Railcar Storage
Storage of railcars is vital to supply chains to balance the seasonal and commodity driven market variances in demand for railcars. The MDDE team has managed agreements with some of the largest energy and commodity companies in the United States. We are open to track leases, including temporary and long-term railcar storage commitments.
Contact us today to discuss rates and availability so that we can begin meeting your storage needs.
Track Leases
Railroad track leases are available to help our shippers meet their transportation needs, and our tracks may be leased for transloading of railcars, or for storage of railcars in transit. We have space available on our Snow Hill Line for track leases, including short- and long-term railcar storage commitments.

Real Estate Access
If you are looking to install a new subgrade pipeline, aerial wire crossing, or other utility occupation within the Railroad Right of Way, or need to access railroad property for another reason - such as maintaining adjacent infrastructure - we are here to assist. We aim to make the process as simple and expedient as possible.
Before beginning an application, please see our Right of Entry Chart to determine whether to follow the process on this page (for our Snow Hill Line), or whether you should immediately contact MTA (for the Centreville, Chestertown and Seaford Lines) for next steps.
-
If you need access to MDDE property, the first step (after checking our Right of Entry Chart) is to complete a Right of Entry Application and follow the form’s submission instructions.
For temporary entry / access, please fill out our Work Permit Application Form.
For utility crossings, private grade crossings, and other permanent occupations under or over the right of way, please fill out our Utility Crossing / License Agreement Application. You will also be required to enter into a Real Estate License Agreement that is subject to an annual license fees, both of which will be provided after your application has been reviewed.
Before beginning an application, please see our Right of Entry Chart to determine whether to follow the process on this page (for our Snow Hill Line), or whether you should immediately contact MTA (Centreville, Chestertown and Seaford Lines) for next steps.
-
Prior to receiving a Work Permit and/or License Agreement, applicants will be required to provide a number of documents, including:
A general location map of the tracks and location where you are seeking to access the railroad right of way.
Drawings of the proposed utility crossing or other occupations, if applicable.
Proof of insurance coverage (see below).
-
Insurance coverage requirements vary based on the type of project and will be determined upon receipt of a Right of Entry or License Agreement application.
The types of insurance and applicable limits typically required are:
Commercial General Liability Insurance
Railroad Protective Liability Insurance (during construction, demolition or maintenance within 50 feet of the railroad right of way)
Workers Compensation Insurance
Automobile Insurance
The required insurance limits may vary from project to project, but typically range from $2,000,000-6,000,000 per occurrence, per policy.
-
Upon receiving your application, our legal department will be in touch with any questions, and information on next steps.
-
Please allow at least 90 days for processing of License Agreement / Utility Crossing Applications, and at least 30 days for processing of Work Permit Applications.
Please note that we can only accommodate short notice requests for entry onto railroad property in situations where emergency repairs are necessary or similarly exigent circumstances exist.
