Employment Process

The MDDE looks to attract candidates that are an ideal fit for the company long-term.   • We conduct interviews with the intent of matching your skills to the functions of the position. Our interviews are designed to provide you with more specific information about our company and the position, while affording you an opportunity to put forth your qualifications for consideration.

  • Your employment history will be thoroughly reviewed. A reference check and full criminal record review will also be conducted. Your driving record will be reviewed, as well as review of your previous DOT employer history.

  • You must be able to verify your High School Diploma, GED or higher education from an accredited institution.

  • Based on results from the background check, we may make a conditional job offer. All job offers are contingent upon the successful completion of the post-offer requirements.

  • The physical and drug screening process allows us to verify your physical capabilities meet the physical requirements of the job. We will schedule and pay for your appointment. Upon arrival at the facility, you will be asked to show a picture identification card, and will then complete a health history questionnaire prior to meeting with the health care provider. The physical exam may include testing to determine your ability to meet the physical requirements of the position. A mandatory drug screen is also part of this process. Your results will be reviewed by a professional medical provider, and we will contact you in order to inform you of the recommendation.

Conductor

The Conductor’s job involves managing and facilitating the safe and efficient operation of the train and crew, including: communicating with the engineer and/or dispatch staff to determine the crew’s job list for the day; inspecting equipment to ensure that it is in safe working condition and in compliance with regulations; working with the engineer to safely and efficiently deliver freight to the railroad’s customers on schedule.

Engineer

The Engineer’s job involves managing and facilitating the safe and efficient operation of the train and crew, including: operating the locomotive, communicating with the conductor and/or dispatch staff to determine the crew’s job list for the day; working with the conductor to safely and efficiently deliver freight to the railroad’s customers on schedule.

Track Inspector

The Track Inspector’s job involves conducting weekly inspections of all MDDE-operated track to ensure that all track is in compliance with federal track safety standards, making emergency repairs as needed, and overseeing track laborers and contractors.
